Hiking - Alpine Summit Loop - Horse Spring 6/22/21

Aspens, wildflowers, meadows, slopes of ferns and a natural spring! What else could you ask for?


Directions: American Fk Cyn, Summit Trailhead. Parking lot and Bathrooms. Trailhead


Cost: Day pass $6 (pay at ranger station at base of canyon or at trailhead kiosk) or bring Parks Pass.

Activity:

Hike Alpine Summit Loop (Horse Flat, Horse Spring, Lame Horse Trail) - Loop 2.4 miles going counter clockwise, always staying to the left. Trail wanders through aspen forest with small meadows. Opens to a large meadow near the top of the loop and then to the high point of the loop. Trail will come to a large meadow on the way down. Trail to the right will take you to Primrose Overlook (steep trail). Loop goes to the left and to the freshwater spring with water troughs. Head downhill through more dense forest with many wildflowers and fields of ferns back to the same parking lot. Trail Report

Camping - Appears to be ideal in any of the meadows along the trail.


Gear:Hiking pants, synthetic T-shirt, long sleeve synthetic top, long sleeve fleece, light waterproof jacket, thin gloves, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camelback or regular back pack with waist belt, 1-2 Liters water, 3-4 snacks, first aid kit, hiking boots/running shoes, trekking poles (optional).


Sample Itinerary:

Trailhead - 5:00 pm

Hike - 5:30-700pm
