Hiking - Big Springs to Rock Canyon, Provo 6/2/26


Itinerary:

Rock Canyon Trailhead - 6:00 am

Set up shuttle - 6-7 am

Hiking - 7 am - 3pm


Directions: Rock Canyon Trailhead , Provo


Activity:

Big Springs to Rock Canyon - this is a strenuous one way 12 mile trail up Big Springs Canyon and down Rock Canyon with beautiful views and bridge crossings. We will be doing 3600 ft elevation gain in the first 5 miles. All Trails Trip Report


Tips: Hydrate up with the last few hours of your day.  Eat a good dinner.  Pack some quality snacks for tomorrow.  Eat something before you start hiking, and drink, drink, drink!


Trail conditions:

  • 3 patches of snow on the way up, all completely avoidable and only a few feet in length

  • Reminiscent of Deseret Peak and Horsetail Falls hikes

  • Deer, coyote, gopher snake, red tail hawk, butterflies, ground squirrels, chipmunks, bunny butt

  • No one on the trail until we reached nearly the bottom of Rock Canyon

Gear: Hiking pants or shorts, synthetic T-shirt, long sleeve synthetic top, fleece, light waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camelback or regular back pack with waist belt, 2-3 Liters water, 4-8 snacks, first aid kit, hiking boots/running shoes, trekking poles (optional).
