Carpool - 5:30 am (5 hr 15 min drive)
Drive to the trail head to be there by 11:00am. (It is a 1 hour drive on hole in rock road.)
Hike - 11:15 am - 3:30pm
Drive Home (dinner on the way) - 4:00pm - 11:00 pm
Directions: Lower Dry Fork Trailhead, Hole in the Rock Road, Escalante
Activity:
Hike Peekaboo and Spooky Cyn - 6.3 mile loop crawling through sandstone passages. Go up Peekaboo and down Spooky. Smallest about 12 inches in Spooky Cyn. There is NO water on this trip and temps can get high March-Nov with NO shade. Don't attempt with rain - flashflood danger. This route requires a 15 foot scramble up a slickrock wall with marginal foot and handholds into Peekaboo Canyon followed more scrambling. Spooky Canyon requires a 10 foot downclimb scramble with little to no footholds on overhanging boulders. Spooky Canyon is also very narrow and requires most adults to slide sideways while dragging their backpacks behind them for most of the canyon. All Trails Trip Report
Tips:
Must be able to fit through the 12 inch bars at trailhead before you start the hike.
Smaller backpacks are easier to wear as you have to take them off to hold behind you at times going through tight spots.
Pack lunch as we will take a short lunch break in between the slots.
We dress in spooky attire at spooky and peek aboo!
We don’t recommend a car. It is about 50 min on a dirt road. It wasn’t too bad but some washboard areas and sometimes the washes get muddy.
Wear grippy shoes
Bring a change of clothes with a garbage bag
Gear: thin T-shirt, thin long-sleeve shirt, light fleece, rain jacket, shorts or hiking pants, running shoes, 4 L water , 6-8 snacks, small backpack, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, first aid kit
