Hiking - Primrose Overlook 10/6/22

Itinerary:

Carpooling - 8:30 am

Trailhead - 9:30 am

Hike - 10:00 am -12:00 pm

Directions: Horse Flat Trailhead up American Fork Canyon

Activity: Primrose Overlook and Horse Spring Trail Loop is a 3.6 mile moderately trafficked loop trail located near Pleasant Grove, Utah that features beautiful wild flowers. There's a fresh spring located below the medow under the Overlook turnoff. Be mindful of your route because there are lots of turnoffs. We did the trail counter clockwise to get a less dramatic elevation change. The loop is a family friendly hike, and while the spur to Primrose Outlook is quite steep, it is an optional climb.

At the Summit Trailhead Parking Lot up Alpine Loop, start at the trail that is west of the bathrooms, see sign “Horse Flat trail”. It starts with some uphill with surrounding aspen trees that opens to a meadow 1.3 miles down the trail. For the spur to Primrose Outlook, there's no sign, just a mini mountain hike up 0.4 mi. It is an out and back. Go up until you see a view of Timp (the trail is blocked off because it goes down to Sundance). Stop at this outlook and then go back to the loop. Continuing down the trail will be a downhill slope leading to a water trough. The trail is just continuing the loop of Horse Flats, which will take you throuhg a fern area before coming to a "T," which is Lame Horse Trail. Take a left, and you will return to the parking lot. Bring a National Parks Pass for your windshield or pay $6 for a day use pass at the Ranger Kiosk at the bottom of the canyon.

TIP:If using Alltrails when you do the Primrose Overlook Spur Trail, be sure to continue on the trail until you see massive 360 views of Timpanogos and Heber Valley. I have had Alltrails say I am at the end of the trail prematurely when in fact, monster amazing views were just around the corner. You will be blown away!
