Mt Youth - Rappelling - Rock Canyon 7/13/26


Sample Itinerary:

10-11 am - Practice rappelling down grassy slope at Rock Canyon Park

11-12:30 pm - Practice free hang rappels and walk over rappels on artificial rock at Rock Canyon Trailhead

Activity:

Rappelling -

  • Rock Canyon Park - Practice walking backwards and using rappel device and stopping on grassy slope. Practice fireman belay. (Tie off ropes to gazebo posts)

  • Rock Canyon Trailhead - Practice hanging rappels and regular step down rappels. There are only 2 bolts on the underside of the east side of the fake rock structure.

    • Hanging rappels - We attached 2 ropes here for hanging rappels and had the youth climb up the structure on platforms and then practice coming down.

    • Step down rappels - Used webbing and cordage attached to the same bolts and brought the ropes over the top and down the west side of the strucure for step down rappels. Make sure youth are on a top belay even though the height is small.

Gear: Harness (can rent - use 5 point harnesses for toddlers and smaller youth), helmet (can rent or use bike/ski helmets if needed), exercise clothing, hiking shoes, climbing shoes (can rent), 1-2 L water, daypack, 2-4 snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, first aid kit, LEATHER or SKI gloves - NO fabric gloves
