Rapelling - Goblin's Lair, Goblin Valley SP 9/26/26

Sample Itinerary:
Friday-
3 PM - Optional - come down Friday afternoon for the Hiking/Laser Tag Goblin Valley SP activity (see separate event)
Saturday -
Carpooling (3+ hr drive) - 6 AM
Meet at Goblin Valley SP Visitors Center (permit pickup) - 9 AM
**Permits are first come first served - if we get a different time than 9 AM, then times will be delayed
Hike to rappel - 9:30 - 10:00 AM
Rappelling - 10:00 - 11:00 AM
Hike out - 11:00 - 12:00 PM
**Drive Home - 1:00 - 4:00 PM

Activities:
Rappelling Goblins Lair - Hike about 2.7 miles total. 0.5 mile hike across the hoodoos to the entrance (the Rangers will give you directions once you get your permit. Rappel anchor is maintained by the State Park and is usually webbing around a large boulder. Rappel 80 ft into chamber - mostly free rappel. There is a small cave tunnel you can explore in Goblins Lair and the base of the exit scramble on the bottom right side - gets narrow and can take you all the way out. Otherwise, scramble up about 30 ft and out. Hike out 1.2 miles in full sun north and then west back to the Goblin Valley parkinglot. Road Trip Ryan Trip Report
Tips-
Getting to the ranger station early is important if trying to get an early permit (it's a 10-15 minute drive from the Temple Mountain East campground)
If you are trying to camp in the park, campgrounds book four months in advance starting at 8:00 AM MST.
There are lots of primitive camping options in the area that are free.
Temple Mountain East campground is $15 a night for a basic site that fit 6 tents and 3 vehicles.
Bring a camelback or small backpack to hold your water because there is some scrambling required to get to the opening of the rappel.
Bathrooms - Flushing toilets with sinks at parking lot
Cell Reception - Poor
Gear: Hiking pants or shorts, short sleeve shirt, light waterproof jacket, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, camelback or regular back pack, 1-2 Liters water, 3-4 snacks, boots/running shoes, harness, helmet, rappel device, PAS, leather gloves (60 m static rope, anchor gear)
