Training - Canyoneering Spring Clinic, Red Ledges, Spanish Fk Cyn 3/21/26


Itinerary:

8:00 am - 12:30 pm - Recertification

1:00 - 6:00 pm - First Time Certification



Activity: Canyoneering Clinic - Learn how to canyoneer! Our awesome trip leaders will teach you the Core Skills from the American Canyoneering Association, including Logics and Safety, Leave No Trace, Rope and Equipment Care, Basic Knots, Intro to Anchors and Rigging, Signals/Communication, Climbing/Spotting/Hand Lines, Rappelling/Belaying/Self-Rescue skills.


  • (Prior to Clinic) Watch Lecture - Online (40 min) watch before and read ACA bookle and be able to describe): canyon ratings, accidents, weather, flash floods, SOS on Beacon, leave no trace, hand signals, Take QUIZ

  • Station 1 - Knots - learn: Fishermans, figure 8 on a bite, figure 8 follow through, munter, clove hitch, water knot, girth hitch, prussik, VT prussik

  • Station 2 - Rock/Rope Skills - scrambling, partner assist/capture, rope bags, setting anchors, rope care, setting rope

  • Station 3 - Rappelling Skills - rappel with backpack, rope bag, VT prussik, add friction and lock off with device, sit start, leg wrap, fireman belay



For those RECERTIFYING for Canyoneering:

-       Canyoneering Knowledge - Watch Mt Mamas Canyoneering video (40 min) and email the answers to this QUIZ

-       Knots - Be able to pass off knots without instruction (water knot, figure 8 on a bight, figure 8 follow-through, clove hitch, munter hitch, double fisherman's knot, VT prussick, prussik)

-       Rappelling – Be able to perform sit start, rappel with backpack, rappel with a rope, add friction and lock off on rappel, use a VT prussik, perform a leg wrap


For those CERTIFYING for the first time for Canyoneering:

-       Canyoneering Knowledge – Watch Mt Mamas Canyoneering video (40 min) and email the answers to this QUIZ

-       Knots – practice these knots and we will review and instruct as needed (water knot, figure 8 on a bight, figure 8 follow-through, clove hitch, munter hitch, friendship knot, VT prussick, prussik)

-       Rappelling – Need to have rappelled once in the last 2 years. We will be teaching you how to be able to perform sit start, rappel with backpack, rappel with a rope, add friction and lock off on rappel, use a VT prussik, perform a leg wrap


Online Tutorials Knots:


Gear: harness (can rent), helmet (can rent), canyoneering rappel device and locking carabiner (if you have them), 1 L water, snacks, leather gloves


Rentals (on your own):

Harness: $5/day (BYU Outdoors Unltd)

Helmet: $4/day (BYU Outdoors Unltd); $4/day (UVU Outdoor Adventure Center)
