Paddleboard and Salmon Run @ Causey Reservoir - beautiful reservoir with three branches to explore. Nestled up at the top of the South Fork of the Ogden River, Causey Reservoir is a fascinating, cozy paddle for anyone looking for a nice day trip. The reservoir at 5,700-foot elevation with a smooth 140-acre area was formed by the creation of a dam. Much of the water comes from snowmelt. We love to hit it in September when the red Kokanee salmon are swimming up one of the streams out of the reservoir. It's a 2 mile paddle each way and takes about 60 minutes each way and about 60 minutes hiking to see the fish.
Tips -
Wear good hiking shoes for the short, steep trail down from the parking lot
The takeout point to dock the paddleboards and hike upstream to see the salmon is very muddy so mentally prepare for that but it gets better as you make your way upstream a little
SALMON RUN viewing - 2 weeks in September. We saw them on the south east branch (LEFT FORK OF THE SOUTH FORK - see map below). Had to hike up the stream about 10 min.
Bathrooms - at the south side and west side parking lots
Cell Reception - NONE once you get to the reservoir
