Sailing - Lindon Marina, Utah Lake State Park 6/4/25

Itinerary:

Utah Lake State Park - 5pm (lots of traffic, come early)

Sailing and instruction - 5-8:00pm


Directions - South launch ramp, at Utah Lake State Park (4400 W Center St, Provo):

Drive straight in from the guard booth until you see the “tower building” and the sign that says “South Launch Ramp turn left”. You will turn left and drive past the first cove. You will then see a brick bathroom and a trailer full of boats to your right.


Cost: Sunfish sailboats, life jackets, and lessons are FREE.

Parking - $15 at Utah Lake State Park or FREE with a Utah State Parks pass. Come 10 min early if you want to park at the gate and carpool in. Allow extra time for traffic.

Activities:

Sailing the Sunfish Sailboats -Instruction at shore picnic tables and then sailing in the cove (we will not be out on the main lake).There will be 2-3 people per boat.  We will also be learning to set up and take down the sailboats. There is a short debrief at the end.


This activity is put on by Jim Daniels, a Sea Scout Leader.


The Sea Scouts will teach and help groups learn to sail for free! Ages 8 and older (younger children with adults). He will put on this activity for families, church, or work groups of 6-12 people or more.

Gear: T-shirt, long sleeve fleece, light waterproof jacket, pants/shorts, swimming suit, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, 1 Liter water, snacks, sandals, fanny pack for your car keys. Life jackets are provided.


Tips and Sailing Videos: (Knowing all the info and terms is not required – it just provides some background)


It’s good to know the sail, the mast, the boom, the lines(halyard, mainsheet), and the tiller

You need to understand the no-godead” zone (pointing into the wind) where the boat will stall


Three things about the sail:

(1) The sailor trims the sail for speed and direction

(2) If your boat is tipping, the sail is too tight – loosen the line (“when in doubt, let it out”)

(3) If you are going slow and the sail is “luffing” –tighten the sail by tightening the mainsheet
