Summer Retreat - Duck Creek 7/14-15/23

Great vacation in Central Utah. It has it all!!! Kayaking, Rappelling, Caves, Hikes and more!!


Itinerary:

Friday

8:15 am - Drive to Cascade Falls Hike

12:00 pm - 12:30 pm

1:00 pm - Lunch (Hot Mamas Pizza)

2:00 pm - Set-up Campground

3:30 pm - 5:30 pm Paddleboard/Kayak Navajo Lake (free)

5:30 pm - Evening Ideas:

  • DC Pub & Grill - food (closes at 7:00)

  • Aunt Sue's Chalet - food (closes at 8:00) Note: Place close early, so be sure to eat earlier rather than later.

  • Spectra Point in Cedar Breaks for a sunset hike at 9:00 pm ($10 Day pass or free with National Parks pass)

  • Shakespeare Festival Greenshow in Cedar City from 7:00-7:30 pm (free)

Saturday

8:00 am - Mountain Yoga

9:00 am - Breakfast Buffet (potluck)

10:00 am - Mammoth Cave (free), ATVs, or Horseback Riding at Duck Creek

11:00 am - Camp Checkout

12:30 pm - Lunch in Cedar City

1:30 pm - Afternoon Ideas:

  • Thunderbird Garden for rappelling/frisbee golf - free

  • Southern Utah Museum of Art - free

  • Parowan Gap Petroglyphs - free

  • Parowan Dino Tracks - free

3:30 pm - Drive Home

Activities:

- Camping - Duck Creek Campground - $23+ per site, tents and RV's, bathrooms


- Hiking - Cascade Falls - 1.2 miles total out and back, dirt path to waterfall. All Trails Trip Report


- Kayaking/Paddleboarding - Navajo Lake - You can drive up near the water in your vehicle to put in (see pin above). Parking lot paved. No bathrooms. Some dirt/shady beach areas. The lake is generally 3 miles long and 0.5 miles wide. Calmer water in the mornings.


- Hiking - Spectra Point Overlook - 1.9 miles total out and back. All Trails Trip Report


- Rappelling - Thunderbird Gardens - 3 bolted rappels on northwest large boulder area. Mountain Project Trip Report


- Hiking - Parawan Gap Petroglyphs - 0.2 miles total out and back paved and dirt trail. Can see petroglyphs from the trail and road very easily. All Trails Trip Report


- Caving - Mammoth Cave - 100 ft to mouth of the main entrance. Climb down and through the gate. Large lava tube for about 300 ft which becomes smaller and muddier and ends in 2-3 small exits. All Trails Trip Report


Excursion Information:

- Horseback Riding at Duck Creek (435-704-1404) $40 1/2 hr ride $60 1 hr ride

- ATV Duck Creek Adventures (702-358-5159) 4 seat side by side starting at $220 for 2 hrs

- Shakespearean Festival (800-752-9849)


Gear: Synthetic t-shirt & long sleeve, yoga pants, fleece, rain jacket, socks, hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spray, sunglasses, pjs, coat, gloves, hat, swimsuit, towel, change of clothes, sleeping bag, pad, tent (will share), pillow, flashlight, sleeping aids, medications, ear plugs, toiletries (campground has bathroom but no shower), Breakfast potluck item (sign up sheet TBA), hammock (optional), 3L water, snacks


Optional Activity Gear:

-Paddleboard or kayak and oar (can rent BYU or UVU)

-Helmet, leather gloves, and headlamp for Mammoth cave

-Blanket for Shakespeare Greenshow

-Yoga mat

-Harness and rappelling device (can rent BYU or UVU)

-Frisbee
