Activity:
Searching for Mustangs - We will be driving to the watering hole area for mustangs, Dirt and rocky roads - high clearance not needed but do know how to change a tire and have all the supplies if there is an issue). The watering area is fed by a spring and the Onaqui Mountains Herd stays pretty close year round. If there are no horses, we check out the Simpson Springs watering hole about 15 min west down the road.
Tips:
NOTE - these are wild horses - keep your distance. If they start to move or run, you are too close. We usually park and let them come to us.
Have youth sit in the back of a truck or on top of your vehicle for safety and good viewing.
There are multiple monuments where original Pony Express stations existed along the Pony Express Rd you will be traveling. Worth checking out or at least listening to a Pony Express podcast on the way.
We have lunch here as well or on the drive to the quarry. No shade, poor reception, but there is a bathroom about 15 minutes down the road at the Simpson springs camping area.
Rock Hounding - Wonderstone Quarry - Bring buckets and hammers for rocks. Easy ups are nice if you have them. You literally can walk around and pick up the rainbow colored sandstone rocks but youth love breaking things too. Note - the main pit is on private property so go to the east of that on the hill. This road requires high clearance vehicle at the very end but may be navigatable in lower vehicle depending on the season.
