Itinerary:
Carpooling: 8:30 am
Trailhead - 9 am
Hike to Cave - 915-11:30 am
Explore Cave - 11:30 am - 4:30 pm
Hike out - 4:30 - 6:30 pm
Directions: Rock Canyon Trailhead, Provo (for cave directions, contact the Timpanogos Grotto)
Activity:
Caving Spanish Moss - This is a beginner vertical cave. A couple miles one way moderate hike up Rock Canyon and then 30-45 min of steep rock scrambling to cave. Entrance is gated. Key is acquired through Timpanogos Grotto. Rappel into cave via 2, 30 ft rappels. Large chamber on a muddy 45 degree slope. Chamber with formations at the top (ascend about 15 ft) and small crawling tunnels with formations at the bottom. Ascend back out. MUST HAVE VERTICAL TRAINING PRIOR TO ENTERING CAVE.
Gear: Vertical ascension gear (harness, chest harness, ascenders, cows tail, rappel device, locking carabiners, slings - can borrow from Mt Mamas or Timp Grotto if you are a member), Helmet, headlamp, small flashlight, extra batteries, (3 sources of light) knee pads. Clothes you are ok to get dirty - Hiking pants or old jeans, synthetic t-shirt, long sleeve shirt, fleece, light waterproof jacket, camelback or regular back pack, 2 Liters water (bottles preferred), 3-4 snacks, brown bag lunch, first aid kit, hiking boots/running shoes, gloves (leather or gardening gloves with rubber palm is best), baby wipes, knee pads
